Rebecca Watkins lived in Panama and Indiana before finally settling down in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in 1998. As a little girl, she recalls her excitement going straight to the inside cover of a new coloring book, just so she could draw her own picture on the blank page. Her love for art blossomed as she took drawing and painting classes throughout high school in Indianapolis, Indiana. In college, she added a studio art minor to her Spanish and education degrees from Wake Forest University (B.A.) and NC State (M.S.A.).
As a former Spanish teacher who traveled throughout the world, she was inspired by the bright and bold colors of Latin American artists and artisans. That inspiration can be seen in the bright colors and bold brush strokes she often uses in her oil and acrylic paintings.
Her paintings can be described as contemporary impressionism, but she isn’t afraid to mix styles, techniques, and try new mediums as she continues to play with color and brushwork. She is best recognized, though, for her fun-loving pet portraits and her colorful landscape oil paintings.
Rebecca believes sharing one’s talents is important and she volunteers her time in a variety of ways in the community. In addition to using her teaching talents as a weekly volunteer tutor, she has shared her artistic gifts across North Carolina, creating the colorful mural for the exterior of the United Community Ministries building in Rocky Mount, painting a Little Free Library for the town of Conetoe, creating scenery for local plays and church Bible schools, donating art to charitable organizations, and volunteering for the Rocky Mount chapter of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. When Rebecca isn’t in her art studio at Bel Air Art Center or volunteering, she enjoys spending time playing board games, traveling, going fishing, and watching movies with her husband, Brent, and son, Jacob. She also loves to spoil her cats, Cleo and Nutmeg, and her golden retrievers, Sam and Maggie.
